You will spend a full day discovering the gorgeous region of Umbria, famous for its vast expanses of olive groves and vineyards. We’ll take the highway for our first stop in the town of Orvieto, situated at 120 km (75 miles) in the north of rome. Less than 90 minutes from Rome, Orvieto sits majestically high above the valley floor atop a big chunk of tufo volcanic stone. A visit here will reward you with a delightful, perfectly preserved, and virtually traffic-free world highlighted by a colorful-inside-and-out cathedral that is widely considered the most glorious example of Italian Gothic. Orvieto also boasts a rich underground world. The town sits atop a vast underground network of Etruscan-era caves, wells, and tunnels. Guided tours of the medieval caves offer a glimpse into how these ancient Italians lived, from the remains of an old olive press to a pigeon coop where the birds were reared for roasting. Even now, you'll still see pigeon (piccione) dishes featured on many Orvieto menus.
After lunch we’ll continue our journey in the rolling hills of Umbria where stands the exceptionally well-preserved medieval town of Assisi. Known primarily as the birthplace of St. Francis (1182-1226 AD), the town has been a sacred place since long before the Franciscan era. Assisi is best known as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi — patron saint of Italy, founder of the Franciscan order, and one of the most popular Catholic saints in history. Around the year 1200, this simple friar countered the decadence of Church government and society in general with a powerful message of non-materialism and a “slow down and smell God’s roses” lifestyle.Like Jesus, Francis taught by example, living without worldly goods and aiming to love all creation. A huge monastic order grew out of his teachings, which were gradually embraced (some would say co-opted) by the Roman Church. Christianity’s most popular saint and purest example of simplicity is now glorified in churches — known for their stark beauty. The ultimate among these is in Assisi — the magnificent Basilica of St. Francis, the 13th-century Basilica which contains the sacred relics of Francis and beautiful frescoes of his life. While the scenes may seem unremarkable today, in 1300 this was radical art — showing believable homespun vignettes, with landscapes, trees, and real people. The church and the town of Assisi, with its Roman ruins, winding medieval streets and sacred shrines, have been a major Catholic pilgrimage destination for centuries and is today one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy.
